#32 - Pat Galyan - Galyan's Trading

The Necessary Entrepreneur welcomes Pat Galyan, former owner of Galyan's Trading Company, for a conversation. Pat took over the family business when his dad was dying in the mid 1970s. Pat talks about converting his business model from selling boats to focusing more on sporting goods, competing with "big box" stores, selling to Limited in the mid 1990s, and retirement. Pat loved the outdoors as a kid, was interested in environmental studies in college, has helped raise millions for protecting wild life, and now enjoys spending as much time outdoors as possible in retirement and loves fishing. Pat addresses hard work, company culture, finding and training the best people you can find, paying them well, and out-competing the competitor.
